This little leaflet was an impulse buy at one of the booths at Riverside CATS 2001; I also bought all the buttons from the same vendor. I began stitching on it in the Riverside Convention Center lobby while chatting with other CATS attendees. As I was working on the left heart, a teenage girl seated next to me told me, "Wow, I didn't know you could stitch rows one X at a time!"
This was my original overdyed-thread learning piece! Not too long before I bought this chart I had received several colors of overdyed threads in trades, and so I decided this was a good way to use them. Of course, none of the colors I had on hand were listed in the chart.
Chart changes:
- letters and border - Thread Gatherer Silk 'n' Colors "Jelly Bean," stitched one X at a time.
- left heart - Weeks Dye Works "Cherry Vanilla," stitched one X at a time.
- star - Weeks Dye Works "Bermuda," using the Danish method (/// across to the end of each row then \\\ back).
- right heart - one strand of "Cherry Vanilla" and one strand of "Bermuda" blended together, stitched one X at a time.
- bottom heart - Weeks Dye Works "Iris," using the Danish method.
- outer corners - Gentle Art Sampler Thread "Red Plum"
I loved seeing and comparing the different effects that resulted from stitching the Xs more than one way. My colors weren't exactly planned out, but it was fun learning and playing with different colors, and I no longer worry about mixing silk and cotton threads on one piece. And I have to mention, Silk 'n' Colors "Jelly Bean" is my all-time favorite overdyed color! I washed the finished project in very cold water and Orvus soap and let it soak for around 20-30 minutes; none of the colors bled as far as I could tell.
